On our doormat at home yesterday landed one of the 7.5 million letters from HMRC sent to explain how they lost my wife's personal details along with the records of 25 million other Britons. The letter is just a small symbol of the dysfunction dogging this government. Only a citizen with no access to a television, radio or newspapers could have missed the Government's lame explanation for how it all happened. There was no point writing to those affected. Sending the letters second class at 24p meant a postage bill of £1.8 million for telling us what we already know.
